Sinatra first graced the boards of the Palladium back in 1950, and played his most celebrated UK concerts at this legendary venue. Since his death in 1998, he has enjoyed an almost continuous run in the West End, first in the hugely successful The Rat Pack, Live from Las Vegas, which recreated one of his most impressive shows, and now in this remarkable experiment.
Ol' Blue Eyes has been resurrected by a bit of technological wizardry. Rare and unseen footage of Frank is projected on to moving screens as a 24-piece orchestra accompanies his legendary voice. 'My Way', 'New York, New York' and the other timeless tunes will be performed with support from backing singers, dancing troupes and moving props.
It sounds like a ridiculous - and rather morbid - concept, but amazingly it actually succeeds on every level. It's helped by the fact that Sinatra's life, even with the darkest moments removed, make for fascinating viewing. Steering clear of dialogue onstage and mixing the singing and dancing with voiceover gives the show real dramatic pace as well as fabulous musical numbers.
With a budget of £5 million, even if this was just a gimmick, it would still be a really spectacular one. The technology on display is awe-inspiring, the dancers dwarfed by the giant screens. For anyone who doesn't love Sinatra this will be the show's only real saving grace, but for those of us who admire the man and his music, this is stirring stuff.
