Widely regarded as one of France's best-known living conceptual artists, Sophie Calle has been creating a stir for some time - 30 years ago she started out by following and photographing strangers in the street. Now the French photographer and social artist is the subject of a major retrospective, Sophie Calle: Talking To Strangers, at the Whitechapel Art Gallery with an exhibition of her works from the 1980s to the current day. Included in the display - which is "like reading a brilliant and innovative contemporary novel" (The Guardian) - is the English language premiere of 'Prenez Soin De Vous' (Take Care of Yourself) - a highlight of the 2007 Venice Biennale. The piece records the reactions - in a variety of media - of a select group of women invited by the artist to comment on an email sent to Calle by her then-partner informing her that he is leaving her. This is classical Calle who makes an artwork of everyday life and elevates the ordinary to a gallery piece worthy of contemplation. About Whitechapel Gallery
Designed in a distinctive Arts and Crafts architecture style by Charles Harrison Townsend, the Whitechapel, Britain's first purpose-built arts gallery, is renowned both for the beauty of its light, airy space and for embracing the local community in its work. Founded in 1901, extensive refurbishment saw the gallery, reopened in April 2009, double in size. More about Whitechapel Gallery
