Southbank Centre's Poetry ParnassusIt seems that the Olympic grandeur has rubbed off on everyone this year as June sees London's Southbank Centre host the largest poetry festival the UK (and possibly the world) has ever seen, with 205 poets from each of the competing Olympic countries descending upon London to battle for their country. Southbank's artist in residence Simon Armitage and artistic director Jude Kelly are behind the ambitious cultural event, which will host readings and workshops with the poets. There will be performances aplenty and a UK tour before the final release of a poetry collection containing all of the 205 chosen poems. Kelly hopes the event will 'celebrate language, diversity and a sense of global togetherness.' The Poetry Parnassus has serious credibility and a list of patrons that reads like the poetry walk of fame. Carol Ann Duffy, Andrew Motion and Seamus Heaney have all been involved in the past. However, this year they trust the public with the task of nominating the poets and will announce the final 205 in the spring.

About Southbank Centre

London's hub of cultural arts, The Southbank Centre announced in March 2013 that it's set for a £100 million revamp that will see the 1960s design finally move into the 21st century with a proposal that includes a floating glass pavilion, two more roof gardens, a space for riverside arts and a large pedestrian area.
