From Basil Fawlty's "Don't mention the war" to the hapless antics of the Home Guard in Dad's Army, humour at the expense of the Second World War is part of the British make-up, even 65 years on. Spike Milligan's Adolf Hitler: My Part in His Downfall adds a mischievous nod to the canon of war-inspired comedy and this world premiere at Hampstead Theatre is a dramatisation of Milligan's spirited memoirs. His double life as Gunner Miller and jazz maestro/comedian/entertainer of troops was recorded as a kind of scrap book of quick-witted anecdotes, diverting sketches and general silliness with diary excerpts, letters and photographs thrown in. From joining the fight against Hitler - "a cunningly worded invitation to partake in World War II", writes Spike - to smuggling their instruments on board a ship to Algeria, it's his own words that bring the wartime experiences of these irrepressible heroes to life. A glorious mix of cheeky humour and marvellous music.
