Spitalfields Music Summer FestivalThe community-minded summer festival returns to Spitalfields and its environs for small-scale classical, folk and contemporary music held in a splendid variety of performance spaces. The best thing about the biannual Spitalfields festivals (a winter festival is held either side of Christmas) is the array of contrasting venues: Old Spitalfields Market comes alive with what seems like impromptu musical performances, Wilton's Music Hall hosts East London collective firefly burning (11th June) while the stunning 18th-century Hawksmoor-designed Christ Church hosts a cluster of classical concerts. Throw in Shoreditch's hip Village Underground for some of the more contemporary offerings, and Spitalfields City Farm for bucolic folk. The eclectic programme includes lashings of baroque, jazz and world music, while there is a series of talks and debates, walks and visits, and interactive workshops. In 2014 highlights include the London premiere of 20 Pianos by composer Matthew Herbert, the world premiere of Passing Light by Bryn Harrison and digital artist Tim Head (15th June), and France's Compangie Kafig who return to the UK with Boxe Boxe, a fusion of music and dance, on Friday 13th and Saturday 14th June at the People's Palace.

About Christ Church Spitalfields

Built in 1729, Nicholas Hawksmoor's Christ Church creation was declared dangerous and closed in 1956. Vigorous campaigning, from the poet Sir John Betjeman among others, eventually saved this city landmark from demolition, but took decades to raise the money for the full restoration that has finally returned one of London's most stunning churches to its full glory.
