The Spitalfields area is unique in Central London for its intense community spirit, and this annual festival shows just what can be achieved by a vibrant local life. Record numbers of people are expected in the newly-restored Christ Church Spitalfields, which is now a grand space of chandeliers and white walls, with a gleaming stone floor, wood-panelled galleries and a spectacular acoustic.
There are ten venues in all, where a phenomenal variety of music can be heard, with works from all the area's many different cultures. There is also a festival fringe, offering some intriguing low-budget theatre and comedy.
Other highlights include special programs of Irish music from medieval to modern, and Melvyn Tan performing Messiaen’s monumental 'Vingt Regards sur l’Enfant Jésus', all in one night.
