Forget Disney's High School Musical; the latest American teenage drama - actually set a million miles from a high school prom in 19th century Germany - is messy, adventurous and shocking. Now playing at the Novello Theatre, when Spring Awakening opened Off-Broadway, Charles Isherwood of The New York Times wrote "when was the last time something new happened in a new musical?", for here is a show where the "new" is palpable. No sing-a-long numbers but Duncan Sheik's vital rock score; no jazz hands but soul-searching students rocking out; no bursting into song because "the hills are alive" but explosions of emotion about masturbation, rape, homosexuality, abortion and suicide. The production scooped eight Tony Awards including Best Musical and Best Score whilst on Broadway in 2007 and a host of glowing reviews for its European premiere at the Lyric Hammersmith with a new British cast; it's now recreating its hard-hitting spirit in the West End.About Novello Theatre
Built in 1905 to form a pair with the near-identical Aldwych Theatre, the Novello Theatre (formerly known as the Strand Theatre) is one of London's more spectacular theatres and has matching roster of hit shows. An attractive columned exterior gives way to a gorgeous foyer and auditorium, with marble, polished brass and gold the dominant materials and gods and cupids sprawled across every available surface.
