Steve McQueenHe's the only UK artist to have won both the Turner Prize and an Oscar, and in spring 2020 '12 Years a Slave' filmmaker Steve McQueen became the first artist to have a show at both Tate galleries in the capital. At Tate Britain his Year 3 project puts primary school children in the frame while here at Tate Modern you can see a career survey spanning more than 20 years, picking up from the last major London exhibition of his work in 1999. Large, immersive video installations present a close-up aerial view of the Statue of Liberty and an intense exploration of the labour conditions of gold miners in South Africa. A mix of personal and public facing works, the exhibition includes 7th Nov. (2001), the date McQueen's cousin Marcus accidentally shot his brother, an event retold with arresting honesty. Recurrent themes address issues of representation, identity and history seen Exodus 1992/97, McQueen's earliest film shot on a Super 8 camera, and Ashes, a tribute to a charismatic man McQueen met in Granada. The only sculpture in the exhibition, Weight (2016), hangs a shimmering gold-plated mosquito net over a prison bed-frame. With films running, on average, for approximately 20 minutes, it pays to be patient and allow time to enjoy them.

About Tate Modern

Located along the banks of the River Thames in the former Bankside Power Station, originally designed by Sir Giles Gilbert Scott in 1947, the architect of Battersea Power Station, Tate Modern opened to great acclaim in 2000. Since then it has welcomed millions of visitors through its imposing doors. More about Tate Modern
