Top of the Common is a free day out of water themed family fun kicking off the week-long Streatham Festival (4th-12th July). Taking place at Streatham Common on Saturday 4th July, this year's event has an aquatic motif which fits in well with the area's long association with water - the Rookery within the common was once the site of Streatham Spa, a popular spot to take the waters in the mid to late 18th century. The Top of the Common day out includes a parade of the 'Giant River Beasts' and features a packed programme of music, dance, street theatre, walks, talks and children's activities, all linked in with the water theme. Have a go on the bath harp or make your musical instrument out of plumbing pipes. There'll be lots of stalls, music from Kasai Masai and belly dancing from Aurora as well as some impressive Tanzanian acrobatics. Following the free day on the common there's a week of events, workshops, talks and concerts taking place at venues throughout the borough including the World Music concert at St Leonard's Church on Saturday 11th July.
