The Belgian-based Flemish / Moroccan choreographer Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is, by his very heritage, open to more than a few cultural influences. But it was his visit to the Shaolin Temple in China, working with the Shaolin Monks over several months, that resulted in Sutra, a five-star performance piece of kung fu kicks and backflips. Collaborating with artist Antony Gormley and Polish composer Szymon Brzoska to create Sutra, Sidi Larbi has fulfilled a life-long interest of exploring the philosophy and faith behind the Shaolin tradition. It's this journey that lends the show a profound tone, bourne out by the reflective pace of the piece. Sutra premiered here at Sadler's Wells in May 2008 and has toured worldwide since, returning last summer when The Telegraph described it as a "brave, thrilling, elliptical piece" concluding that, "modern dance has few more extraordinary journeys".
