From across the Atlantic, American Ballet Theatre's Swan Lake - part of Spring Dance at the London Coliseum - is going head-to-head with the Royal Ballet's revival. Both reprise the Petipa/Ivanov choreography of the 1895 Swan Lake at the Mariinsky Theatre, so you really can take your pick between these two classically traditional productions, although this one has the catch-it-while-you-can factor of only running for seven nights. The fairytale nature of this most famous of ballets never goes out of fashion as the age-old question of whether love will prevail - throw in a prince in his castle and a spell by an evil magician - is enchantingly played out to Tchaikovsky's soaring score. The leads are performed with consummate grace by some of the world's most accomplished principal dancers and lavish sets and a shimmering corps de ballet complete the picture.About London Coliseum - English National Opera (ENO)
