Alternative Fashion Week happily returns to its birthplace at Old Spitalfields Market, after a year away in the Truman Brewery - home of the trendy, 20-something clone. Let’s hope it gets back in touch with its underground roots. The week-long fashion gala is fabulous fun, featuring loads of outfits too outlandish even for Milan (the fetishwear and fantasywear sections spring to mind), not to mention a fair number of designers whose garments are suitable for the street and affordable too. The lunchtime shows are open to all and are accompanied by the lilting sounds of contemporary jazz. The fashion market is a great place to pick up some forward-thinking bargains. The event is packed to bursting point with London’s aspiring models, who rock up en masse to try and get scouted, which means some fabulous people-watching opportunities. Bright young designers and quirky models will be showing off innovative fashions - some on the edge of the mainstream, some utterly mad. Forget the insipid media circus of London Fashion Week, if you enjoy fashion and want to stay ahead of the pack, this event wins by several lengths. It's all about supporting new talent and making a fashion show more approachable and affordable to everyday folk. We love it. They also take collections for the AIDS charity Terrence Higgins Trust - entrance is free so try and dig deep for this worthy cause.
