THIS EVENT ENDED ON THE 14TH NOVEMBER 2009
The Menier Chocolate Factory possesses a unique charm with its ticklish, irrepressible, intimate style of musical theatre and Talent is the latest show to hit the right note at this effortlessly cool venue. Star entertainer Victoria Wood is the author of this comedy with songs, also playing the role of Maureen - the fat, tag-along friend at a grotty talent night - in the original 1978 production at Sheffield's Crucible Theatre and then alongside Julie Walters in the telly version. Wood is back at Bunter's nightclub, the scene of said grotty talent night, but this time she is directing the action as Maureen and her glossier, slimmer mate Julie, who dreams of the bright lights of stardom, wait backstage. Talent has all the ingredients of that gritty, heart-warming brand of British working class drama (think The Full Monty and Little Voice) from the down-at-heel club scene to pictures of bleak domesticity. It's a distinct type of comedy but we think the formidable combination of Wood and the Menier will make this a sure-fire hit.
