The Rise and Fall of London is the second is a series of three talks held at the London Transport Museum to mark the 150th Anniversary of the London Underground with all three authors of the book, 'Underground - How the Tube shaped London', presenting monthly illustrated talks. On Monday 25th February 2013 Oliver Green continues the series, concentrating on the 1920s and 30s when Lord Ashfield and Frank Pick were at the helm. It was a golden era for the Underground when cutting edge art, design and architecture were used to give the transport system a new, progressive appearance. But everything suddenly changed in 1939 when war descended on the city and the deep tunnels had dual purpose, sheltering Londoners while the train service continued to run daily.
About London Transport Museum
After a two-year, £22 million refurbishment the London Transport Museum reopened on 22 November 2007 revealing more exhibition space than before. The museum travels back through the 200-year history of public transport, arranged according to several themes: London Transport's famous design heritage, the poster collection, public transport during both World Wars and plans for the capital's development in the twenty-first century.
