Visitor Information
David Bownes, Head Curator at the London Transport Museum from 2009 until 2012, opens a series of three talks at the museum's Cubic Theatre held to mark the 150th anniversary of the London Underground. In his talk, The Underground Pioneers, he starts at the very beginning, on Saturday 10th January 1863 when 30,000 people took the underground train - the very first in the world - from Paddington and Farringdon. Sending a steam train underground had inevitable problems - all that smoke and little ventilation - but, undeterred, the underground soon became an essential feature of London life. This talk is one of three to be held between January and March, by all three authors of 'Underground - How the Tube shaped London', a special 150th anniversary book.
About London Transport Museum
After a two-year, £22 million refurbishment the London Transport Museum reopened on 22 November 2007 revealing more exhibition space than before. The museum travels back through the 200-year history of public transport, arranged according to several themes: London Transport's famous design heritage, the poster collection, public transport during both World Wars and plans for the capital's development in the twenty-first century.
