Tate Britain Commission: Simon StarlingThe Turner Prize winning artist Simon Starling has been selected to create a major new project for the 2013 Tate Britain Commission. Winning the Turner Prize in 2005 with ShedboatShed - in which he dismantled a wooden shed on the banks of the river Rhine, created a boat and sailed it down the river before reassembling it in a museum - Starling was tasked with creating a new piece for the Tate's Duveen Galleries which addresses the heritage of the space as a sculpture gallery. He has done this with 'Phantom Ride', an invitation for visitors to take a 'rollercoaster ride on invisible rails'. Taking inspiration from the genre of film popular in the early days of cinema, 'Phantom Ride' will fill the gallery space with huge projection screens and reveal significant artworks and events that have animated the space in previous years. The ghostly apparitions will feature Fiona Banner's 'Jaguar' from 2010, Martin Creed's 'Work No. 850' and Scott Myles' 'The End of Summer'.

About Tate Britain

Overlooking the River Thames, Tate Britain was originally founded through the philanthropy of the sugar magnate Sir Henry Tate. The Tate legacy now encompasses three other galleries around the UK, including Tate Modern also in London. Dedicated to showcasing Britain's artistic talent, Tate Britain is home to the greatest collection of British art from 1500 to the present day. More about Tate Britain
