| Playwright Polly Stenham is just twenty years old, and presents adolescent dramas with an insider's eye for detail: That Face is her tale of a disgustingly rich and hopelessly dysfunctional family, kept supplied with booze, pills and misery by mad mother Martha. Dad has disappeared to Hong Kong with a woman half his age, and Martha has taken to her bed, from where she obsessively clings to her son and ignores her troubled daughter. Lindsay Duncan mingles valium languor with hissing vitriol as Martha, while Hannah Murray (Skins) and Matt Smith make a great blackly comic double act as the snobby, ruined children of these hopeless parents. A perfect blend of Ab Fab-style comedy and disturbing drama from a precociously brilliant playwright. |
