Set in the mid-1960s in a Harlem gospel church, The Amen Corner at the National Theatre tells the story of an uncompromising female pastor who finds that her congregation are turning against her. Marianne Jean-Baptiste - who returns to work in the UK for the first time since Mike Leigh's 1996 film Secrets & Lies - stars in this drama which sees the grievances of the congregation escalating upon the return of Sister Margaret's absentee musician husband and her increasingly wayward son. Written by James Baldwin and directed by Rufus Norris, the story unfolds through the rousing beat of the gospel choir, exploring the sense of love, grief and spiritual survival.
