The Big British Bang windows at Selfridges, one of London's best known department stores, give a hint of what's happening inside in celebration of the Diamond Jubilee. The Big British Bang festival this summer brings a riot of union jacks, marmite and tea with very British things to buy at The Big British Shop, the Britannica 1951-1953 exhibition, and a fantastic Big British Tea Party up on the roof. Not only can you enjoy afternoon tea and light lunches on the Oxford Street store's roof, you can book in for a round of crazy golf - on a course created by inventive food sculptors Bompas & Parr who have brought around 200 cypress trees to the roof. Golf can be booked up to three weeks in advance, between 31 May and 2 September, 12noon-6pm daily. From 4 May to 24 June 2012, the Britannica 1951-1953 fashion exhibition, created in collaboration with milliner Stephen Jones - who has put together a collection of hats especially for the occasion - pays homage to some of the most desirable styles worn by the Queen's contemporaries between 1951 and 1953. Trust Selfridges to put on such a fun yet fashionable celebration of very British tastes.
About Selfridges
Don't be fooled into thinking that this huge department store is simply a Mecca for commercialism and shopaholics. Selfridges has a truly fascinating history that supports its excellent reputation for providing a huge range of high quality goods. Emphasising the ethos that "shopping should be fun", the stores original founder, US entrepreneur Harry Gordon Selfridge, defined the shop's hands-on, theatrical image that has endured since its opening in 1909.
