Italian artist Giuseppe Penone has spent the last 45 years examining modern society's complex relationship with nature. His current installation at the Whitechapel Gallery continues this concept with a huge bronze tree that has been hollowed out and displayed in sections. The piece was made by casting a real tree, which was then chopped up, destroyed and is now only traceable through the art. "The result is eerie and magnificent, a gnarled, complex, strange object. Life's ramifications are suggested by proliferating boughs." (The Guardian)
About Whitechapel Gallery
Designed in a distinctive Arts and Crafts architecture style by Charles Harrison Townsend, the Whitechapel, Britain's first purpose-built arts gallery, is renowned both for the beauty of its light, airy space and for embracing the local community in its work.
