Fifteen years of being trapped in a cell have passed and, stuck in a bureaucratic maze, petty criminal Wilhelm Voight wanders 1910 Berlin desperately searching for identity papers and an honest job. Instead, he comes across an old military uniform in a fancy-dress shop and discovers that with his disguise people are only too willing to comply with his every command. What doors will this new-found power open for the ex-convict? Ron Hutchinson's English version of Carl Zuckmayer's satirical play comes to the National Theatre this January and sees Antony Sher take the title role.
