Divisive director Katie Mitchell - "a diminutive bundle of precisely focused energy" according to The Independent - presents Dr Seuss's classic children's tale, The Cat in the Hat, as a Christmas treat for young children at the National Theatre: Cottesloe Theatre, after which it transfers to The Young Vic for a six-week run. The National Theatre director is best known for her adult productions causing controversy by cutting up texts by heavyweights like Checkov. Recent projects have included Purcell's Dido and Aeneas at the National and she has collaborated several times with Martin Crimp - on The City, Attempts on Her Life and a famously ill-received version of The Seagull. Staging The Cat in the Hat for youngsters is something of a departure as it's her first play for children - her own four-year-old daughter, Edie, is the ideal age for the three to five-year-old aimed-for audience. Given Katie's reputation for pushing the boundaries - and for incorporating dance in her adult plays - we can expect a lively and engaging version of the cartoon cat in the red-and-white-striped hat who Sally and her brother find so funny.About National Theatre: Cottesloe Theatre
The Cottesloe Theatre is the black box studio space of the National Theatre. It is also the smallest, the simplest and the most flexible - and many people would argue that it is also the most influential. The dark, rectangular room holds up to 300 people.
