Arthur Miller's The Crucible, a classic play based on the Salem witchcraft trials in Massachusetts which took place during the 1690s, marks the beginning of the Open Air Theatre summer season at Regent's Park - one of London's most magical theatrical settings. Based on the 17th century witch hunts in Salem, Massachusetts, the story is a chilling vision of collective hysteria, and is undoubtedly among the greatest plays of the 20th century. Timothy Sheader, now in his third season as Artistic Director of the Open Air Theatre, directs a cast which includes Emily Taaffe as the venomous Abigail Williams, Emma Cunniffe as the put-upon Elizabeth Proctor, and Patrick O'Kane (recently seen in War Horse) as her husband John - the play's hero. Joining them is Oliver Ford Davies, a Royal Shakespeare Company and National Theatre regular who appeared in Hamlet alongside David Tennant, who plays Deputy-Governor Danforth, the judge who presides over the court proceedings.About Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park
