The Discovery of Paris: Watercolours by Early Nineteenth-Century British ArtistsAlthough the Wallace Collection is rightly thought of as a great British institution, at least part of its roots lie in Paris, where both the 4th Marquess of Hertford and Sir Richard Wallace, who founded the collection, spent much of their lives. In The Discovery of Paris, a free, temporary exhibition at the grand Manchester Square house in Marylebone, we are shown the French capital as an important site for British painters, including J.M.W. Turner, in the early 19th century. The exhibition features seventy watercolours, preperatory prints and associated prints, including outstanding works by Thomas Girtin and Richard Parkes Bonington, and other artists who are now less familiar, such as Thomas Shotter Boys and William Callow. The Discovery of Paris outlines the astonishing contribution of the British to the iconography of the French capital, capturing Paris on the cusp of becoming the major tourist destination that it has been for the past century or so.
