The Gospel According to the Other MaryThe world stage premiere of John Adams's ambitious The Gospel According to the Other Mary creates parallels between the story of Christ's crucifixion and resurrection, using both secular texts and Biblical sources to tell the story from the point of view of Mary Magdalene, her sister Martha and brother Lazarus. Staged as a concert in the main Barbican hall in March 2013, this is the first time the work, designed by John Adams and his librettist/director Peter Sellars, has been staged as a full costumed opera. The Other Mary is, Sellars has said, an attempt to "set the passion story in the eternal present, in the tradition of sacred art". Set design is by George Tsypin, the man responsible for the opening ceremony of 2014 Sochi Olympiad and the sets for 'The Little Mermaid' and 'Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark' on Broadway.
