As part of the Greenwich and Docklands International Festival, a life-sized art installation of a 17-metre sperm whale will be beached in Greenwich. The Great Greenwich Whale has been designed by Belgian artists Captain Boomer Collective in collaboration with Zephyr Wildlife Reconstruction and will give Londoners the chance to appreciate the sheer size of this magnificent creature without the harm of a real whale. Beached on the Thames at the Cutty Sark on Thursday 20th June, the whale will then be moved to the lawns of the Royal Navy College for the weekend as part of the Greenwich Fair. With 18th century Greenwich the centre of the London whaling industry - the streets lamps and houses were lit by whale oil, the cables for whaling were made in Greenwich and whale oil was used in the local wool industry - this will be a chance to mark the long relationship between the area and whales. The Greenwich and Docklands International Festival is renowned for its large-scale spectacles so the Great Greenwich Whale will be an appropriate addition to the programme.

About Cutty Sark

The restoration of the Cutty Sark has seen £50 million spent on the famous tea clipper ship which was damaged by fire on 21 May 2007. But with much of the ship already removed from the site, most of the original has been restored. More about Cutty Sark
