We never meet the central character in Rory Kinnear's debut play, The Herd, but his presence is strongly felt. It's Andy's 21st birthday and his family are coming together to celebrate. Things don't quite turn out as planned - and that, put simply, is the message of the play. Andy's parents have split up under the strain of looking after their severely disabled son who has a mental age of nine months. There are some quick witted one-liners and moments of humour coupled with a big reveal which keep the momentum going. The play offers some life survival tips from a family which has undergone years of strain. A strong cast includes Emmy award winning actress Anna Calder Marshall, Adrian Bower whose television credits include Rev, Harry and Paul, Teachers and Gimme Gimme Gimme, and Louise Brealey who last appeared at the Bush Theatre in Sixty-Six Books. Kinnear (who is currently appearing in Othello) has teamed up with his friend from the National Theatre, the Olivier Award-winning director Howard Davies, who directs.
London's essential theatre for new writing has been the first step into the big time for dozens of Britain's best playwrights. Challenging, disturbing and original works are often accepted by the Bush Theatre, and find their way to the West End. Moving from the room above O'Neill's pub in Shepherds Bush Green to the former Shepherd's Bush Library building on Uxbridge Road in 2011, the theatre acquired larger premises as well as a laid back bar/library and cafe (open Monday to Saturday, 8am to 11pm), worth a visit even if you're not here to watch a play.
