A new production of Helen Edmundson's critically-acclaimed The Heresy of Love will be staged at Shakespeare's Globe this July. Helen - whose adaptation of Coram Boy for the National Theatre won her much praise - has taken inspiration from the life of Sor Juana Ines de la Cruz, writer of The Houses of Desires, and uses all the devices of Spanish Golden Age Theatre intrigue and danger, passion and politics, comedy and tragedy. Taking place in the late 1600s in a convent in Mexico, the story is based on a gifted and progressive writer who finds herself at the centre of a fatal struggle between two Princes of the Church. A "bold and eloquent play that confronts titanic conflicts between church and state, faith and creativity, and male and female" said The Guardian, reviewing the play on its debut two years ago in Stratford.

About Shakespeare's Globe Theatre

This replica of the Shakespeare's 16th century theatre, reconstructed just 200 yards from its original site, is the brainchild of American actor and director Sam Wanamaker. Built in wood and thatch, using techniques from 400 years ago, Shakespeare's Globe Theatre opened in 1996. More about Shakespeare's Globe Theatre
