The Icarus ProjectEncouraging a stir of imagination and a challenge of intellect, The Wapping Project is hosting The Icarus Project this July. Inspired by the Greek philosopher Epicurus - "to say that the season for studying philosophy has not yet come, or that it is past and gone, is like saying that the season for happiness is not yet or that it is now no more" - The Icarus Project is curated by Sofia Stevi with Jules Wright and Celia Lowenstein and encourages guests to get caught up in the heat of debate. Hosted outdoors, the events will be accompanied by a refreshing glass of Pimm's and the smell of magnolias. It spreads across three Saturdays and invites a selection of leading thinkers to host a range of talks. Kicking off the series on Saturday 13th July was Professor Angie Hobbs, non-fiction writer Molly Oldfield and Professor David Sedley. Saturday 20th July welcomes columnist, novelist and human rights activist, Joan Smith; author and Literary Editor of The Times, Erica Wagner; and architecture critic of the Observer and author, Rowan Moore. The following week, on Saturday 27th July, Ian Sinclair, author, historian, film maker and producer, will offer a talk and will present a rare screening of 'The Dark Eyes of London', a 1939 film by Walter Summer which is based on the 1924 novel by Edgar Wallace. Further attendants are Federico Campagna and Rye Dag Holmboe, a doctoral candidate at University College London.

About The Wapping Project

Built in 1890 and originally used to power machinery using stream and later electricity, the unique space of The Wapping Project is now a thriving centre for the arts. After its closure as a pumping station in 1977, it emerged as a multi-purpose exhibition and performance space. More about The Wapping Project
