The Life Of GalileoWhen 17th century Italian scientist Galileo Galilei showed that the Earth orbits the sun, rather than vice-versa, he received not plaudits and prizes but persecution from the Catholic church who saw his teachings as heretical. Bertolt Brecht's play, here in a new translation by Mark Ravenhill and directed by Roxana Silbert, celebrates scientific discovery while engaging with the disappointment felt by Galileo's followers when their hero, threatened with torture and under house arrest, finally recanted. This version was performed by the Royal Shakespeare Company at the beginning of 2013 and stars Ian McDiarmid in the title role.
