Simon McBurney brings his award-winning theatre company Complicite to the Barbican with a new adaptation of Mikhail Bulgakov's classic Soviet satire. In the novel The Master and Margarita there are two plot lines, one follows the last few days in the life of Jesus Christ, the other the chaos of Moscow, satirising the Soviet system and bureaucracy. While Pontius Pilate argues with Jesus about the nature of human worth satan comes to save the world. Happy-Go-Lucky actress Sinead Matthews, who is no stranger to the stage - she recently starred in Mike Leigh's play Ecstasy at Hampstead Theatre - takes on the role of Margarita, opposite Paul Rhys. For an insight into the staging of this 'unstagable' novel there's a post show talk with Simon McBurney after the matinee performance on 24th March.
