If you thought you had trouble with your builders spare a moment for Ivan - his builders have unearthed a Roman Bath underneath his floorboards. This is just the beginning of The Roman Bath, the first play by Bulgarian comic writer Stanislav Stratiev, which makes its UK premiere at the Arcola Theatre in a new version by Justin Butcher. Hugely popular in his native Bulgaria - the play, written in 1974, ran for 10 consecutive seasons in Sofia and was last revived in 2006 - The Roman Bath skips along at a fast pace as events unfold amidst the increasing wreckage of Ivan's flat. At its heart the play explores what happens when the needs of the individual come up against the interests of society as a whole - the rights of the individual versus the good of the nation. This pointed comment on the communist regime in Bulgaria is wrapped up in a comic cast of professors, businessman with dodgy Swiss connections, local councillors, reporters and the national union of lifeguards - all of whom want a piece of the action.
