The RoofAs you stand with your headphones on a trap door opens and a figure in a red jumpsuit stands ready to play, and so The Roof, an outdoor theatre-parkour summer spectacle begins. The audience occupy this figure as he makes his way through various levels of a computer game, becoming more disillusioned as the game goes on. There are hints at a narrative - a girl in a glass box may or may not be the 'princess in the tower' who may or may not need rescuing. It's not clear. Visually, there are some memorable motifs - rabbits in sixties clothes swaying their hips hypnotically; majorettes who beckon like sirens; majorette legs dangling - and the music and sound composed by Dave Price work well to connect audience and performers. But the video game visualisation doesn't entirely immerse, and the lack of narrative is confusing. Even so, this the third collaboration between David Rosenberg (co-founder of Shunt) and Frauke Requardt - following Electric Hotel and Motor Show - offers theatre goers something different and will no doubt appeal to fans of Super Mario style computer games. Part of the LIFT Festival.
