Nearby The Staffordshire Hoard

When it was discovered in July 2009 by metal detectorist Terry Herbert The Staffordshire Hoard was likened to the discovery of Sutton Hoo. Now select pieces from the largest Anglo-Saxon hoard in Britain, overseen by the Portable Antiquities Scheme, goes on display temporarily at the British Museum. More than 1,500 individual items including sword-fittings, helmet fragments and gold Christian crosses dating from the seventh century were unearthed, the fine craftsmanship and predominance of gold suggesting a royal ownership. Strange - possibly mythical - animals are included in the exquisite designs which depict a crocodile, an eagle head and snakes. The story behind how the hoard, possibly a collection of trophies, came to be buried beneath the Staffordshire hills is yet to be unravelled. But what is known that this was a turbulent time in Britain, a time when no one king ruled the country, and it's thought that the hiding of the treasure could well have been the result of bloodshed. This idea is backed by the fact that the vast majority of items in the hoard are martial - war gear, especially sword fittings. However, the mystery remains and all the secrets of The Staffordshire Hoard are yet to be revealed. All images courtesy of www.staffordshirehoard.org.uk.
