A bizarre fairytale opera in Russian by Tchaikovsky's own fair hand makes its Royal Opera House debut this winter. The Tsarina's Slippers, or Cherevichki to give it its native title, is based on Gogol's The Night Before Christmas, in which all manner of strange happenings occur by the Devil, presumably because he wants to ruin Christmas. Russian village life is lifted to fantastical heights by Tchaikovsky's magical music as Vakula the blacksmith jumps on the Devil's back to fly to St Petersburg for the Tsarina's slippers, all for the hand of his beloved Oxana. Russian performers sing in their mother tongue, giving this the feel of an authentic folk tale, while director Francesca Zambello injects her trademark zing to elevate the fairytale.About Royal Opera House
This impressive building in the heart of Covent Garden has been playing host to major stars of the classical music world since 1858. The third theatre to be located on this site, today's Royal Opera House is the result of a reconstruction in the 1990s (although the main auditorium is part of the original building).
