The VortexDescribed as 'un peu shocking', 'The Vortex' was Noel Coward's first great success. Its dark plot focuses on drug abuse among upper classes and a tense relationship between Florence, a highly-sexed mother and Nicky, her cocaine addicted son. With Nicky struggling to deal with his cocaine addiction, the resentment he has for his mother and her constant extramarital affairs is on the verge of an explosive climax. Coward wrote the character of Nicky with the intention of casting himself and, alike to Coward, he was homosexual - a fact that had to be subtly conveyed due to current attitudes. Brimming with controversial topics, the notoriety attracted large audiences and encouraged the move from a small theatre to a West End stage. Now, after numerous successful revivals, 'The Vortex' is set to take the stage once more.
