Conor McPherson's drama transfers to London's West End in January 2014 following a hugely successful run at the Donmar Warehouse in 2013. McPherson's The Weir was first premiered in 1997 when it won the Evening Standard, Critics' Circle and Olivier Award for Best New Play. Now 15 years on, with The Donmar's Josie Rourke directing, this modern classic is enjoying a revival. Opening with the gathering of three men in a rural Irish pub, a routine daily pint is soon interrupted by the arrival of a further friend and a female companion. The presence of the woman encourages the men to embark on telling stories that have a supernatural theme. Delving into tales of Irish folklore, ghosts, fairies and mysterious happenings, one story is eventually told that is so realistic and chilling that it surpasses anything the men could have envisaged. Original cast members Brian Cox, Risteard Cooper and Dervla Kirwan return for this staging at Wyndham's Theatre in Soho.
Wyndham's Theatre opened in Charing Cross Road on 16th November 1899 and was owned by Charles Wyndham. One of its biggest hits was Sandy Wilson's The Boy Friend which ran for 2078 performances before transferring to Broadway. During the sixties and early seventies, stars such as Alec Guinness, Vanessa Redgrave and Diana Rigg all took to its stage. More about Wyndham's Theatre
