James Graham's black comedy The Whisky Taster at The Bush Theatre throws old and modern together when an aged Scottish whisky taster is whisked down to London to help two advertising whizz-kids hone the gimcrackery of a new campaign. Barney and Nicola are the career executives in question, two promising highflyers who come into conflict when one wishes to take a step back from his full-throttle London life. Barney's ability to see things in remarkable technicolour and translate his gift of feeling, smelling and tasting colour into words is getting him down. He pines for a black and white existence, but his work partner Nicola is bent on chalking up successful account upon successful account. The arrival of a wily sedate Scottish whisky taster (played by John Stahl) brings their campaign to a standstill just as deadline day looms as a younger generation is given its comeuppance and forced to take a breather from their hectic lives. James Grieve directs.
