There has been something of a Russian theme running through the National Theatre these past few years, what with Philistines in 2007 and Burnt by the Sun last year. Now Mikhail Bulgakov's civil war-set drama, The White Guard, takes centre stage at the National's Lyttelton Theatre with Howard Davies directing a new version again written by Andrew Upton who, with his actress wife Cate Blanchett, is joint artistic director of the Sydney Theatre Company. Described as a "trenchantly acted, brilliantly designed and spiritually uplifting production" (The Independent), this is the second time Davies and Upton have collaborated - it was Upton's adaptation of Gorky's Philistines which Davies directed back in 2007. In this latest drama the Turbin family home in Kiev is the centre of the action, the turmoil of the Russian Civil War setting the surreal situation in which Lena, her brothers and their vodka drinking friends find themselves. Conleth Hill and Justine Mitchell star alongside a cast which includes Anthony Calf, Pip Carter and Paul Higgins.
