Edward Hopper's snatched etchings of everyday life, a couple's unheard conversation on the El (or elevated) train, are a voyeuristic glimpse into American life. Through prints by artists including Hopper, John Sloan, Josef Albers, Louise Bourgeois and Jackson Pollock, 'The American Scene' and the changes taking place in social, political and everyday urban life from the early 1900s and right up to 1960 are revealed. The Jazz Age, the Depression, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and the Second World War are all seen through the artists' interpretations. The 147 featured works are all taken from the British Museum's noted Department of Prints and Drawings - one of the top three collections of its kind in the world with approximately 50,000 drawings and over two million prints. These regularly changing exhibitions are a great way to access such significant drawings in a meaningful way.
