Once again, the clever folk at the Imperial War Museum have put together a first-class exhibition that reeks of emotive wartime poignancy. This time though it's for the kiddies and is certainly a powerful eye-opener. The Children's War marks the 60th anniversary of VE Day and shifts the perspective to the experience of British children on the home-front. With detailed explorations of evacuations, air raids and rationing, modern day tots and teens can share in the remarkable but anguished childhoods of their wartime contemporaries. The moving centre-piece is a walk-through re-creation of an ordinary family house as it would have been during the war. They've also shipped in part of an original prefabricated house from Peckham. With this and a raft of genuine letters, photographs, diaries and oral recordings the exhibition is fantastically nostalgic and absorbing. The interactive and hands-on approach of the exhibition will simply captivate your kids. Not only is it a great way to get them interested in the past but it's also completely free and ingeniously displayed. The museum has extended the exhibition until 2010. We're delighted, it's an absolute treat.
