In 'The Sacred Made Real', the National Gallery explores the role of the hyper-realist sculptures in Spanish art during the 17th century. Through important works like 'Christ after the Flagellation' by Velazquez, as well as fellow artists Cano and Zurbaran, the impact of their paintings and painted wooden sculptures is revealed. Velazquez and Cano learned the art of the polychromed, or colourfully painted, sculpture from their teacher Francisco Pacheco whose works are also represented here. Although undeniably beautiful they do come with a warning: hyper-realistic blood splattered sculptures like Gregorio Fernandez's 'Dead Christ' "may not be for the squeamish", says The Guardian. Alongside this dramatic piece on loan from the Museo Nacional del Prado in Madrid are significant and stunning sculptures by Juan Martinez Montanes and Pedro de Mena, with many of the works still used for devotional purposes.About National Gallery
The National Gallery dominates London's Trafalgar Square with its neo-classical columns and portico designed by William Wilkins adjoining the square on its east side where it has been pedestrianised. Some of the finest examples of European art, ranging from 1260 to 1900, are included among the 2,300 paintings filling its halls and rooms. More about National Gallery
