Thomas SchutteFor most Londoners, Thomas Schutte is best known for his Model for a Hotel sculpture which occupied The Fourth Plinth in Trafalgar Square for 18 months from 2007. From 25th September 2012 we will be treated to a more in-depth look at the German artist, who lives in Dusseldorf and was born in Oldenburg in 1954, through a solo exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery which focuses on a selection of key sculptural, painted and photographic portraits. The artist who has been "delighting and baffling his audience with works made in a bewildering variety of materials and manners" (The Guardian) has returned to portraiture throughout his career, but this is the first time an exhibition has been dedicated entirely to these works. Key examples of Schutte's most famous works include the Mirror Drawings series described by author and critic John Berger as "works of self-discovery". Another highlight is Vater Staat (Father State), a towering steel sculpture of a figure which reassesses the figurative traditions of art which will surely give visitors a broader understanding of the importance of this contemporary artist - beyond their first impression of his Fourth Plinth hotel.
