Directed by Thom Southerland, Titanic at the Southwark Playhouse is a scaled down chamber version of Maury Yeston and Peter Stone's 1997 musical. With a number of technical hitches and bad reviews, during the previews the musical seemed to be its own sinking affair. However, after salvaging the wreckage, it went on to win five Tony Awards including one for Best Musical. Now, the musical is revived to once again tell the story of the disaster that struck the 'unsinkable ship'. Focusing on real characters aboard the RMS Titanic, including Isidore Straus and his wife Ida, who are travelling first class and Alice Bean and her husband Edgar, travelling in second class, the musical delves into the hopes and aspirations of the fated passengers.
