For the third year running, August sees Trafalgar Square filled by a program of music, theatre, dance and art, a further reminder of the endless possibilities offered by this beautiful space at the heart of our capital.
This year, it's been rechristened. The bland 'Summer in the Square' has been replaced by the exciting-sounding 'the City dreams, the City speaks, the City celebrates'. The first week features laidback dance, and aerial work from many of the UK's finest troupes, the second is full of the voices and music of London's many communities, while the third offers grand performance and spectacle.
Highlights include Irie! Dance Theatre's wild show in the fountains, a new work by multi-talented choir The Shout and a massive Chinese wedding dance from Yellow Earth, which will swathe the square in colour.
Events take place at regular times from Thursday to Saturday and there's something different every day, so my advice is just to get down and see what's happening whenever you're in the area. The pedestrianized Trafalgar Square is a lovely spot in summer, a natural meeting place in the heart of the capital, and it's great to see it used in such innovative ways. |
