Founded in 1610, Lambeth Palace Library is one of England's oldest public libraries and to celebrate 400 years since its birth they're putting on an important exhibition of Treasures of Lambeth Palace Library - 400th Anniversary Exhibition 1610-2010 within Lambeth Palace's Great Hall. Manuscripts, artefacts and beautifully illustrated books include those of Richard Bancroft, Archbishop of Canterbury from 1604-1610, whose collection resulted in the formation of the library. Some exhibits are on display for the first time and this is a chance to see rare documents like The MacDurnan Gospels which were written and illuminated in Ireland as far back as the 9th century. Other highlights include a Gutenberg Bible from 1455 - the first book printed in Western Europe from movable metal type; and the 12th century Lambeth Bible, regarded as one of the monuments of Romanesque art. You can also see a number of books owned, used and annotated by a string of royals including King Richard III, King Henry VIII, Queen Katherine of Aragon, Queen Elizabeth I and King Charles I. Significant papers include a copy of the warrant for the execution of Mary Queen of Scots, and documentation on the divorce of King Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. These are truly treasures of historic importance and this is a wonderful opportunity for the wider public to appreciate them.About Lambeth Palace
Lambeth Palace is one of the few medieval buildings left in London. It is also the last survivor of the great London seats of the Bishops located along the South Bank of the Thames. The Archbishop of Canterbury has owned it since about 1200, and it remains his London residence. More about Lambeth Palace
