English film director Joe Wright, known for Pride and Prejudice, Atonement and Hanna, will make his theatre directing debut this year as he directs Arthur Wing Pinero's ' Trelawny of the Wells ' at the Donmar Warehouse . Josie Rourke, the Donmar's artistic director as of 2012, describes the play as Pinero's love letter to theatre and states that "it feels very apt that having grown up in a theatre, Joe should be directing Trelawny of the Wells". The play is an 1898 comic piece that tells the story of Rosie Trelawny, the shining star of a theatre company who gives it all up for love. However, once she is married, she is left with the stark reality of a life away from her beloved melodramas and recapturing her vivacious persona becomes somewhat of a challenge.
About The Donmar Warehouse
Housed in an impressive red-brick industrial building - at various times a brewery, a banana warehouse and a film studio - this tiny repertory theatre is one of the great success stories of the 1990s. Created as a studio space for the RSC in 1977, it became a shabby but popular fringe theatre in the 1980s, a testing ground for producers with big ideas but little money.
