Christopher Hampton's adaptation of Anton Chekhov's comic tale Uncle Vanya at the Vaudeville stars Ken Stott, Samuel West and Anna Friel, and is directed by Lindsay Posner. Chekhov's masterpiece takes place on the rural estate of an elderly professor, who is visiting from the city with his younger, glamorous second wife Yelena (Friel). This ribald study of ennui in the provinces involves an eternally frustrated love triangle between Yelena and two friends - estate manager Vanya (Scott), brother of the professor's late first wife, and the local doctor, Astrov (West). Throw in Sonya, the professor's daughter from his first marriage, who is smitten with Astrov, and the professor's proposed sale of the estate, and a farcical crisis pervades the stage. Blending sparkling wit and earthly humour, Uncle Vanya is one of the most celebrated comedic studies of the trials and tribulations of the human condition. Confusingly, this four-month Vaudeville production is the fourth revival of Uncle Vanya to take park in and around London this year. Spring saw productions at the Minerva Theatre, Chichester, and The Print Room, Notting Hill ("both are superb - The Telegraph), while a small six-day production of Uncle Vanya is brought to the Noel Coward Theatre in November by Russia's award-winning theatre company Vakhtangov.

About Vaudeville Theatre

Designed by CJ Phipps, the Vaudeville is the third theatre to be built on this site. The current Vaudeville opened on 23rd February 1926 with a revue called RSVP. One of the theatre's major successes was in 1954 with the musical 'Salad Days', starring Julian Slade and Deborah Reynolds. More about Vaudeville Theatre
