Urban Comedy AwardsThe first annual Urban Comedy Awards comes to the Hackney Empire promising "a night of side-splitting laughter and stylish glamour". Bringing you the above (apparently) is Kojo, the self-appointed Fresh Prince of Hackney, who co-hosts with American pop singer D. Woods, formerly of MTV-built group Danity Kane, who presumably will provide the glamour (her comic credentials are unknown). Kojo, the "Hackney Haystack", is much-loved on the urban comedy scene - (which tends to mean 'black comedy', indirectly pigeonholing all country dwellers as white, or at least mirthless townies) - and was a sell-out regular at the Empire before recently moving across the Atlantic. A special performance from a "top US comedian" is promised by organisers (which is just as well) as acts battle it out for the gongs.

About Hackney Empire

Renowned East London entertainment venue designed by celebrated architect Frank Matcham. Stan Laurel and Charlie Chaplin both trod the boards here in the Hackney Empire's music hall heyday but the unique domed building was reduced to being used as a bingo hall for much of the 60s and 70s.
