Ivy League indie outfit Vampire Weekend bring their hybrid brand of Afro-prep indie rock to the Brixton Academy for two nights on the back of the release of their second album, Contra. Fresh out of Columbia University, the four-piece broke onto the scene in 2007 with the single Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa, followed swiftly by an eponymous debut album which blended everything from reggae to Irish folk and US indie rock, via a trip to the bongo jungle with strong influences of Congolese souk and Nigerian juju. Branded "Upper West Side Soweto" by the band itself, it was certainly an original sound from a group which nevertheless threatened to drown in their own pomposity, covering topics ranging from obscure punctuation (Oxford Comma) to 17th century French architects (Mansard Roof). And yet Vampire Weekend not only survived, but thrived, with English audiences taken by "the best band to come out of New York since The Strokes" (NME) and no doubt won over by orchestral riffs that sounded very similar to the Ski Sunday theme tune (M79) and an anthemic song named after Arsenal's only English player (Walcott). Their new release is described as "brainy, confident and generally awesome" by Rolling Stone.
